History:

Gangzur village is a small agricultural community located in the western part of Bhutan. It is located at an elevation of 1930 m above sea level and is home to around 200 inhabitants, mainly from the Ngalop ethnic group. The village has a long and rich history. It was first established during the 10th century and has since then been home to many generations of farmers and weavers. In the 17th century, Gangzur witnessed a wave of immigration from Tibet, due to religious differences. This influx of people caused the village to grow as many chose to make their homes in Gangzur. In the early 19th century, the village was attacked and looted by robbers from the British India, due to the gold mines and salt trade that Gangzur had become involved with. After this attack, the village’s inhabitants began to re-establish the foundations of the village. This included the building of a Roman style church by a French missionary. Gangzur’s locals have traditionally been involved in agriculture, and continue to produce grains and vegetables to this day. They are also involved in animal husbandry, with cattle, goats, donkeys, and horses being among the most commonly kept animals. In addition, users of the village also produce handicrafts for sale to tourists. Today, Gangzur is a quiet and peaceful village, with the majority of people relying on agriculture for their livelihoods.
