History:

Punakha Dzong, known as the 'Palace of Great Bliss', is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. It was built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of the Bhutanese nation. He made it the administrative and religious center of the region. The dzong was built as a fortress on a hill top in the fertile valleys of Punakha, although it was later destroyed by fire in the 17th century. It was reconstructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who also installed a large figure of a phallus believed to have come from the Karmapa's Nyingma tradition. This figure is still revered by many Bhutanese people today. In the 19th century, the dzong was damaged by floods and was later rebuilt. After renovations, the dzong was then used as the winter home of Bhutan’s Central Monastic Body as well as other government offices and civil courthouse. Punakha Dzong possesses a high spiritual and sacred architecture. This is evident in the intricate and colorful paintings which appear in its walls and the grandness of its interior. It houses several temples which contain statues of more than 200 deities. The Punakha Dzong Festival is held every year in February, when the image of the great saint Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) is carried around the fortress. The festival is a huge celebration for the Bhutanese people, who come from all over the country to witness the processions of Buddhist monks, townspeople dressed in colorful attire, and folk dancers who perform traditional dances to the sound of music.
