History:

Pangri Zampa Monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Bhutan and is located in the Trongsa District on the west bank of the Mo Chu River. Its origins can be traced to the 9th century when Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, visited this site to practice meditation. The first monastery to be built here was constructed during the reign of the Eighth Desi, Choley Juenpa Namgyal in the 17th century. The present day Pangri Zampa Monastery was built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It stands on the site of a meditation retreat surrounded by lush pine trees and looking out onto the Mo Chu River. The main structure of the monastery is a two-story building, 6 meters tall, with a central hall, Guru Lhakhang, and a meditation chamber. The main hall houses a statue of Guru Padmasambhava as well as statues of other spiritual protectors. Pangri Zampa is the spiritual home for the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism in Bhutan. It provides refuge and spiritual guidance to its followers, and is still an important center of Buddhist scholarship and religious practice.
