Nyinma Goemba, commonly known as Puna Tsang Chhu Goemba, is one of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan. Located in the Punakha Valley, it originally served as the state monastery of the Drukpa school of Buddhism. Founded in 1637, it is the birthplace of the current Je Khenpo (head abbot). After the construction of Punakha Dzong, the monastery was moved to a hillside overlooking the river and the dzong (fortress), and was renamed Nyinma Goemba. The monastery houses several important relics, including a giant clay statue of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and an original copy of the Kangyur (Buddha's teachings). One of the main attractions is a 16th-century image of the gods Jigje, Palden Lhamo and Vimadho, which is known as the "Three Protectors". Worship Method:

The traditional Buddhist worship method and rituals practiced by Nyinma Goemba in Punakha, Bhutan are based on the ancient Tantric teachings of the first Buddhist tantric yogi, Lord Padmasambhava. The special Vajrayana ritual of “Rinpoche Chhardo” (the Guru Rinpoche Fire Puja blessing) is regularly performed at the monastery. This ritual is a request to Padmasambhava and his consort, Yeshi Tsogyal, to come and bless all disciples. The procession of the Guru Rinpoche relics (the “Rinpoche Kudung”) is also a part of the worshipping ritual at Nyinma Goemba. The Living Master, who resides at the monastery, performs the monks’ daily puja as well as the major festivals such as Losar, Saga Dawa, and Drukpa Tseshi. Besides, the worshippers make an offering to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) in the form of colorful Butter Lamps, and perform traditional rituals such as body-touching, circumambulation of the Chorten, circumambulation of the Goemba, circumambulation with prayers, prostration, donation, and chanting of mantras to please their guardian deities.
