History:

is also known as Jigme Namgyel Dzong, is the administrative and religious center of Bumthang District. Its fortress provides a prominent landmark in Bumthang valley. Built in 1549 by the great Lama Ngagi Wangchuk, the dzong, which means fortress/monastery, overseen by the talo-Poen (custodian of the monastery). It is located on a hill at the center of the Bumthang Valley, stretching almost 180 meters in length. In Jakar Dzong, Bumthang the style of worship is quite traditional and steeped in Buddhist ritual. During weekly visits to the dzong, visitors can witness monks performing rituals such as chanting mantras, burning incense, and placing offerings such as fruits for enlightened beings. Visitors can also take part in Gen-kha (lama dances), Monlam (annual festival), and Choe-deh (Guru kyo-dak).
