Worship Method:

The nuns of Zilukha Nunnery practice devotion and spiritual growth through the traditional ritual of prayer and chanting. The nuns practice the doctrines of Dzogchen, or “the great perfection”, which is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism. Within the nunnery there are various ritual practices and offerings that are made to honor the local devas, local protector deities, Dharmapala, as well as other deities in the pantheon. The praying and chanting practices performed at the nunnery are done both individually, and in groups. The nuns use musical instruments during the chanting, such as drums, cymbals, and bells. The chanting of mantras and offering of prayers is done to inspire spiritual awakening, and a better understanding of the Buddhist path. During their practice the nuns may use imagery and visualizations to help them connect with their spiritual practice. The nuns participate in other devotional practices such as bowing, lighting butterlamps, and burning incense. These all serve to honor and cherish the deities and the Buddhas teachings. Such practices also provide mental focus and help the nuns to gain insight into their own spiritual practice and let their faith flourish. The nuns also practice meditation and body movement exercises in order to remain focused while chanting, and to achieve deeper levels of understanding and connection with the spiritual realm. These exercises help them to keep their minds and hearts still, and full of mindfulness. The nuns also partake in retreats in which they can sing, chant, and practice various kinds of meditation for a period of a few days or a few weeks. This retreat time helps them to further explore the depths of their spiritual practice, and to move closer to enlightenment. This most visited temple in Bhutan
