History:
is a religious and monastic institution of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1676, Kharchu Dratshang is the oldest Monastery in Bumthang, with the present 18th Abbot, the Very Venerable Chimung Kyab being the foremost of the three main monasteries in the area. Its main objective is to preserve the teachings of Buddha, the Buddhist philosophy, ritual prayer practice and meditation (Tsok-Drubchen) as well as culture of the people of Bhutan. 1. Kharchu Dratshang is a Buddhist monastery located in the Bumthang Valley of Bhutan. 2. It was established in 1748 by Trongsa Poenlop Minjur Tenpa. 3. The monastery is home to around 60 monks and it also houses a large library of Buddhist texts. 4. It is believed that Kharchu Dratshang was once the summer residence of the Zhabdrung Nawang Namgyel. 5. Every year, during the Bhutanese New Year, the monastery hosts the ceremony of Chorten Kora. Chorten Kora is the sacred ceremony wherein a statue of the Lord Buddha is carried in procession around the monastery. 6. The monastery also celebrates a sacred ceremony, called Lhabsol, every summer. During the Lhabsol ceremony, monks perform sacred dances and offering of prayers to appease different deities. Worship Method:
The official worship method of the Kharchu Dratshang in Bumthang is the tantric tradition of the Nyingma, the oldest lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The worship involves chanting prayers, prostrations, and offerings of food, incense and other votive items. Visualization meditation is also practiced to aid in developing devotion. In addition, there is a special cycle of practices that are done daily, along with the regular offerings of light and water to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Most of the rituals are performed in the traditional way, using bells and drums, and the traditional Bumthang dress.
