History:

Santa Rita Church was established in 1955 in the small village of Santa Rita, a rural community located in the Corozal District of Belize. The village was founded in 1894 and was originally known as Santa Maria de Nacazcol. It was home to a few dozen mestizo families who were cattle ranchers and subsistence farmers. The first church was constructed in 1915, but was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932 and was never rebuilt. In 1955, an elderly Irish-American woman named Mary Elizabeth Finn, known as "Mother Finn" to the villagers, became a benefactor to Santa Rita. She was touched by the stories she heard when she visited the village and of the people's strong faith. After hearing of the need for a place of worship, she donated funds to build a new church in Santa Rita. The construction was completed in 1962 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Over the years Santa Rita Church became an important part of the community where people could come together to celebrate religious holidays, baptisms, and other sacraments. It also served as a gathering place for the villagers and a respite from the hardships they faced due to poverty and lack of other services.
