History:
Nim Li Punit is an ancient Mayan archaeological site in southern Belize. The site's most prominent feature is the “Stela 10” – a tall limestone slab carved with a portrait of a Mayan ruler surrounded by hieroglyphs. Stela 10 is dated to around AD 731 and is believed to represent a local ruler of Nim Li Punit, who may have been part of the emerging kingdom of the Quiche Maya. Stela 10 was originally part of a larger group of statues, monuments, and walls that were used to mark out the ceremonial center of Nim Li Punit. These monuments were likely used to honor the dynasty’s ruling elite and to perpetuate its political power. The hieroglyphs reveal information about the king’s genealogical affiliations and his reign. The inscription also details the celebration of a religious ritual associated with the king’s accession to the throne. Today, the site is managed by the Institute of Archaeology of Belize and is open as an archaeological park and tourist destination. Stela 10 itself has been moved to the National Institute of Culture and History museum in Belize City, where it is on display to the public.
