Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is a hidden cave in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve in western Belize. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancient Maya used the cave as a ritual center from the Late Preclassic (around 300-100 BC) into the Protoclassic (100 BC-250 AD) . It is well known for its wealth of human remains and the artifacts of the ancient Maya, including several intact clay vessels. The archaeological deposits of this cave have no parallel in the Maya Lowlands. The earliest references to the cave date back to the 1840s when local news accounts described the location of the cave and its many chambers. However, it was not until the 1950s and 60s that archaeological research began to take place in this area. An expedition by Edwin Shook and Al Poot in 1960 was the first to systematically survey and record the cave and its treasures. In the following years, more explorations and archaeological excavations were carried out in the area. These resulted in the discovery of several ceramic vessels and other artifacts of the ancient Maya, such as stucco masks, carvings, and stone tools. The artefacts discovered within ATM are especially important as they are in their original context.
