History:

The ancient Maya people inhabited the present-day area of Belize around 1500 BCE and were greatly influenced by their city-state, Minanha. Established in the 9th century CE, Minanha was located in the east of the modern-day Toledo District. It became one of the most influential and powerful city-states in the Maya world during its peak. The city was ruled by kings and shaman-priests who controlled politics and religion. Several royal tombs have been discovered within the city’s ruins, as have artifacts and fine pottery from the Late Classic Period. As one of the largest cities within the Petén Basin, Minanha built large palaces, pyramids, plazas, and fine art. Despite its power and influence, Minanha eventually suffered a mysterious decline in the Post-Classic Period. Around 900 CE, the city was abandoned and its inhabitants moved to other Maya city-states. To this day, archaeologists are still debating the mystery of Minanha’s decline.
