La Inmaculada Roman Catholic Church In Belize: History,Facts, & Services

The La Inmaculada Roman Catholic Church in Belize was built in 1731 in Belize City. It is the oldest Catholic Church in the Western Hemisphere that has been in continuous use. The original wooden building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1831, but the local parishioners did not give up; the new, stone church was completed in 1834. It is the only church that is still standing of the four original churches built in Belize. Inside, the church features beautiful frescoes, stained-glass windows and ornate wood carvings. The services at La Inmaculada Roman Catholic Church in Belize include baptisms, weddings, funerals, and Mass services. The Mass services include traditional prayers such as the Rosary, the Kyrie, Holy Communion and many others. The main celebration is on December 8th which is the feast day of the Immaculate Conception. During this time there is a special rosary prayed followed by a procession through the streets of the city. The church is open to the public for services and to view the beautiful frescoes and carvings. It is a popular tourist destination and attracts many people who want to learn more about the Catholic faith.
