Anglican Diocese of Belize In Belize: History,Facts, & Services

The Anglican Diocese of Belize is the Anglican provincial Episcopal entity covering the entire country of Belize. It is one of the nine dioceses that constitute the Anglican Church in the Province of the West Indies. The Diocese was originally founded in 1883 as the Diocese of British Honduras, and consisted of twenty-five parishes located in Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador. The current Bishop of the Diocese is Philip Wright. The Diocese is focused on promoting and advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and its mission focuses on four core areas: prayer and spiritual growth; social justice and transformation; witness and mission, and stewardship. The diocese works with churches and local communities to identify social problems and encourages members to help through involvement and prayer. The diocesan offices are located in Belize City, and the diocese is divided into twelve consecrated regions or “deaneries”, corresponding to the geographical, social and ethnic divisions within the country. These deaneries are based in Belize City, Belmopan, Benque Viejo, Corozal, Orange Walk, San Ignacio, Dangriga, Stann Creek, Toledo, Sarteneja, Cayo and Placencia. The Diocese of Belize is a member of the Worldwide Anglican Communion and has been associated with the Province of the West Indies since 1919. The Anglican mission in Belize dates back to the early 18th century, when the British government drew up a plan to establish a permanent Anglican presence in the British Colony of Belize. In the 1940’s, the Diocese of British Honduras was formed out of the Anglican Mission in Central America. Since then, the Diocese of Belize has steadily grown and flourished, and today, the Anglican community is a vital part of the life and culture in Belize.
