History:

The Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in Brussels first opened its doors in 1927 following the acquisition of a large collection of arms and armour from newspapers magnate Renaissance Gossal. The museum has undergone several changes in ownership and structure since, and is currently managed by the Belgian Defence. In 1933, the Royal Military Museum, as it was then known, was declared an official museum by the government of Belgium and became known as the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History. It was during this time that the museum began to expand rapidly, acquiring an extensive collection of arms and equipment from Belgium's global military engagements of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1957, the museum moved to a new and much larger location in Brussels, situated near the Cinquantenaire Memorial and Arch. This provided the museum with the opportunity to exhibit its growing collection of military artifacts. The museum continued to be an important landmark and even gained international fame thanks to its extremely modern and meticulous restoration techniques. In 1998, the museum was declared an approved non-profit organisation (ASBL) and acquired extra funds thanks to new sponsorships. In 1995, the museum's historical collections were reorganised and, for the first time in its history, began to include exhibitions on military history and the history of Belgium’s armed forces. Today, the museum is home to an extensive permanent collection which showcases the history of Belgium’s military, ranging from the 16th century to the present day. The museum also houses an important research library and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences and other events. In 2015, the museum celebrated its 80th anniversary with the launch of the ‘Heritage of Arms’ permanent collection. This collection showcases the history of arms and military equipment from all the major periods of Belgian military history. The museum is also actively involved in promoting knowledge of Belgian military history and educating visitors on the importance of its heritage.
