History:

Alden Biesen Castle in the Municipality of Bilzen is located in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The castle was constructed as a fortified stronghold in the 12th century, and has since been renovated and used in a variety of ways. The castle was initially built during the reign of Henry I, Count of Luxembourg, in 1147. It was initially designed to serve a defensive purpose, with it being located close to the Limburg border. The castle was subsequently fortified during the 13th and 14th centuries, and used as a stronghold for various noble families. In the early 16th century, Ludenhoff de Biesen, a member of a noble family from Flanders, purchased the castle and began a long renovation process to make it more comfortable and habitable. This renovation was completed in 1557, and afterwards, the castle passed through a number of different hands, including their family, the noble de Reifferscheid family, as well as two other noble families. In 1789, the princely family of the princes of Salm-Kyrburg acquired Alden Biesen Castle. During their ownership, the castle was used as a hunting lodge, and the family held frequent hunting parties here. The castle was renovated and expanded once more during this period, and remained in their ownership until the end of the 19th century. In 1945, the castle was acquired by the Government of Limburg, and was used as a refugee center until 1951. Afterwards, Alden Biesen Castle was bought by the Province of Limburg, and it was refurbished and opened to the public as a national heritage site in 1976.
