Saint Mary's Royal Church was originally built in the 1240s as a chapel for the nearby convent of Genken. In 1578, the church was burned and destroyed during the Eighty Years' War. In 1812, reconstruction began and in 1843 it was officially opened as a parish church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Belgium.
