History:

Het Steen, also known as "the Stone", is an iconic castle in the city of Antwerp, Belgium. It is one of the oldest medieval future structures in the city, and has stood for nearly one thousand years. Although it was initially built to serve as a fortress and prison, Het Steen has been used for many different purposes over the centuries, and has since become a major tourist attraction. The earliest written reference to the castle is from 1157, when it was used to protect the Schelde river. Over the course of its history, the castle has been passed through different hands and different occupations. It was originally under the control of the Counts of Flanders from the 12th until the 15th centuries, at which point it was taken control of by Charles V of Spain. In 1577, Dutch forces took control of Castle Antwerp and Het Steen, and held it for fifteen years until they were forced to surrender to Spain in 1592.
