Walloon Church In Belgium: History,Facts, & Services

Walloon Church in Belgium is an independent Protestant Church that is rooted in the Reformation of the 16th century and practices its evangelical faith in accordance with Belhar Confession. It belongs to the Reformed or Calvinist family of Churches and is part of the United Reformed Church of Belgium. Its history dates back to the origins of the Reformation in the mid-16th century, when the Walloons, led by the French-speaking Calvinists, began to reject Roman Catholic Church authority. For centuries, Walloons formed the majority of the Church in Belgium. By the 19th century, however, a Roman Catholic majority had emerged and the relationship between the two Churches became strained. In 1960, the Walloon Church was officially separated from the Roman Catholic Church, gaining its independence. The Church is based on the principles of the Reformed tradition and its main commitments include maintaining its Protestant character, including the use of Vernacular and Protestant symbols, obeying and honoring the Bible as the sole source of Christian doctrine and worshiping God through prayer and the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper. The Walloon Church holds traditional beliefs on issues such as the authority and infallibility of the Bible, the nature of God, the reality of miracles, the depravity of mankind, and the doctrines of election and predestination. Walloon Church services are held weekly in French or Flemish, and communion is served monthly. The church also offers child and youth catechesis, educational classes and seminars, and pastoral care services. Additionally, the church is active in the local community through its partnerships with local charities, relief organizations, and volunteer programs.
