History:

The Groeningemuseum is located in the heart of Bruges, Belgium and is home to the city's most well-known collection of art. The museum was founded in 1874 and is housed in a 15th-century building, which was restored from its original state in the 19th century. The museum was initially known as the Municipal Museum and was the home of many works from local painter Jan van Eyck. In 1880, it was renamed the Groeningemuseum for Claes de Vos (1586 – 1651), the former head of the local painting guild. He was born in Bruges and is best known for his works of art in the Flemish baroque style. The museum's collection was expanded from this period until present day, with highlights including works by such masters as Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Hans Memling, and Paul Bril. In addition to these works of art, the museum also features countless masterpieces from later periods of painting, sculpture, decorative art, and applied arts, such as silverware, fabrics, and musical instruments.
