History:

The Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) was founded in 1898 in Tervuren, Belgium, by King Leopold II of Belgium as part of his larger effort to promote Belgium's colonial presence in the African Congo. The museum was originally intended to showcase Belgian-Congo relations, and as a means of promoting Leopold's vision of development in the Congo. The museum was opened to the public in 1910 and features a variety of exhibitions related to the Congo and African cultures, including ethnographic displays, live animals, arts and crafts, and scientific collections. The museum was also utilized to help Leopold II propagate his vision of development and progress in the Congo to the Belgian people. In 1960, the museum was renamed the Museum of Central Africa (MCA) and opened to a wider audience. The museum was renovated in the early 1970s, and its collections have since grown to include more than 200,000 artifacts from all over the African continent. In 2002, the museum's name was changed back to the Royal Museum for Central Africa, reflecting its original founding purpose. The museum is open to the public and hosts a wide range of educational activities. It also houses a library and research facility, which is used by many scholars studying different aspects of African and Congolese culture, history, and politics.
