History:

M-Museum Leuven is a provincial museum in Leuven, Belgium, and has its roots in the City Museum which opened in 1897. It is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the city's history and culture through its collections of art and historic artifacts. The City Museum of Leuven, founded in 1897, initially began as a small collection of artifacts and historical documents and photographs. It was housed in the City Hall and consisted of works donated by the citizens of the city. By the 1960s, the collection had grown to include archaeological artifacts, paintings, prints, ceramics, and textiles from the Middle Ages until the present. In 1992 the collection was moved to the Sint-Michiels-Kapel building in the centre of Leuven, and opened as the Provincial Museum of Leuven. Its mission was to promote knowledge and appreciation of the city's history by displaying a range of art and artifacts related to the period. In 2008, the museum changed its name to M-Museum Leuven in honor of the Leuven citizen, Martinus Soiron, who donated the majority of the collection.
