History:

Mons Town Hall has a long and rich history, dating back to the 12th century. In 1165, the City of Mons was founded and the first Town Hall was built in 1213. The building was originally designed to be a residential and administrative building. In the early 14th century, the Town Hall was moved to its present location and construction was completed in 1445. The Town Hall has undergone a number of renovations and expansions. In 1540, it was expanded with a large hall and other facilities. In 1580, the building was used for the Mayor’s Justice Court. Later on, in 1608, the Town Hall was extended again, with a number of chambers, a library, and an archive. In 1797, the French invaded and occupied Mons. The Town Hall was largely destroyed and the archives were removed and taken away by the occupying forces. In 1843, the Town Hall was restored and expanded again with a watch tower. It was further extended in 1859, when a room for the mayor was added. By the end of the 19th century, the Town Hall was neglected and in need of repair. In 1910, it was restored to its original condition. Later in the 20th century, it was modernized and renovated again.
