History:

Market Square in Ypres, Belgium, dates back to the late 11th century when it was initially a livestock market and a fair trading ground. The town itself was founded in 881 and greatly expanded during the 12th and 13th centuries. During this period, the square was larger, extending from the current Town Hall of Ypres to the church of Saint Nicolas. By the 16th century, the market had become known as the Great Market and had grown to become one of the largest trading markets in Europe. International traders came from all over to sell a variety of goods and services, from food and fabrics to horses and slaves. The Great Market was made up of hundreds of booths and enjoyed contributions from more than 75 countries. The 17th century marked a period of prosperity for Ypres and the Great Market. The city was given the title of 'Green Gate of Flanders' due to its appearance and stature. In 1678, the French army laid siege to Ypres in an attempt to reclaim it from the Spanish and Dutch forces. During the siege, the market square was destroyed but was later rebuilt in 1714. Following the destruction, the square was renovated to its current state. Numerous buildings were added, including the iconic Cloth Hall, which was completed in 1887. The Cloth Hall houses a museum dedicated to the Great War, which took place in Flanders Fields.
