History:

The Horta Museum was established in 1973 in honor of the Belgian architect, Victor Horta. The museum is located in the former home of Horta, the "Hôtel Tassel," which was designed by him in 1893–94. The museum covers the two buildings that Horta designed, as well as their gardens. The buildings are a source of knowledge about Art Nouveau architecture and its development in Brussels. Horta’s creations, particularly his use of iron to support structures, have had a significant influence on the development of architectural styles since the turn of the 20th century. The museum contains over 14,000 objects related to Horta as well as those of his contemporaries, including the renowned architect Charles Girault. The collection includes Horta-designed furniture, textiles and pottery, as well as construction plans, sketches, and models. The museum's library has an extensive collection of books dedicated to Horta and his contemporaries. The museum also hosts regular lectures, workshops, and film screenings in order to bring attention to Horta’s works and to promote architecture and art from the Art Nouveau period.
