History:
Sint-Urbanuskerk’s construction began in 1305, when floor tiles were first put in place. Anterior to this, there used to be a smaller wooden chapel situated on the site which dates back to 1224, the year in which Zottegem was officially founded. During the 15th century, two later additions were added - an entire nave in 1466, plus in 1495, a new front building, of a "Flamish gabled architecture" appearance. This structure withstood the test of time for centuries, but due to its age, many restorations and adjustments were necessary during the 17th to 18th centuries. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Belgium.
