History:

The Town Hall of Mons, located in the city center of Mons, Belgium, has a rich history beginning in the 16th century. Before the Town Hall was constructed, the city was governed by a Town Council who was in charge of all civic matters. The Town Council decided that a new Town Hall should be built, and voted to approve the plan for a new building in 1545. Construction of the new Town Hall began in 1554, and was finished in 1602. The façade of the Town Hall was remodelled in the 19th century, and the two large towers with belfries were added. The belfries were refurbished to stand 43 meters high, and contain 35 bells in total. The building underwent extensive renovation in the late 20th century, with the interiors being completely redone to restore them to their former glory. The salons on the first floor were open to the public, as were the old archives underneath the building. The Town Hall remains a symbol of the city of Mons, and serves as the current home of the City Council and the Mayor of Mons.
