History:
Grodno Regional Drama Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Belarus. It was founded in 1864 by the architect and engineer Michail Viecci. The theatre was first established in the town of Novogrodna, which is now part of the Grodno Region. The theatre’s first production was William Shakespeare’s King Lear. In the years that followed, the theatre has had the privilege of performing works by major Belarusian and Russian playwrights and romantics like Alexander Ostrovsky, Osip Mandelstam and Alexander Pushkin, as well as celebrated foreign authors like William Congreve. In 1891, the theatre moved into its current location at a building in the center of the old city of Grodno. For the next 25 years, the theatre remained in Grodno until it was moved to the newly built Orsha Theatre in the 1920s. In 1938, the theatre reopened at its original location in the city of Novogrodna. During World War II, it became the site of military and cultural events that were organized by the Nazi occupation forces. But after the war, the theatre started to regain its status as a center for culture and art. The first post-war season was opened by Mikhail Shchepkin. In 1975, the theatre was named Grodno Regional Drama Theatre and more than 60 of its troupe members were awarded state honours for their contributions to the art of theatre. Through the years, Grodno Regional Drama Theatre has seen some of the most talented actors and directors in Belarus. Celebrated company members include Anatoli Verbitsky, Natalia Lopatkina, Anatoli Yakovlev, Lev Osipovich and Evgeny Dragunov. In the 21st century, the theatre continues to create contemporary works inspired by prominent Belarusian, Russian and international playwrights. Over the years, the theatre has produced some of the most renowned and groundbreaking plays and continues to attract a wide variety of patrons year round. Today, the theatre is a part of the National Theatre Association of Belarus and is recognized as one of the top theatre companies in the country.
