History:

St. Lawrence Bay, Christ Church was a settlement of freed slaves during the 19th century. Slaves were freed by the British in 1833 following the Abolition of Slavery Act and were then typically assimilated into the rural parish of St. Lawrence Bay, Christ Church. The settlement was known by locals as St. Lawrence Settlement and is located on the coastline of present-day Bridgetown. The settlement consisted of 60 homes and a chapel. Many of the freed slaves were former British soldiers who served during the Napoleonic Wars. Prior to British colonial governance, the site of St. Lawrence Settlement would have been inhabited by indigenous people from the Kalinago or Arawak tribe. As the British settled Barbados, they initiated sugar production on the island which had a lasting and devastating effect on the indigenous people. During the 19th century, St. Lawrence Settlement experienced immense growth and development; school and churches were built, and a road linking the settlement to an adjacent town (St. John) was constructed. The settlement remained largely unchanged until about the 1950s when it was ultimately developed into a residential area. The population of St. Lawrence Bay, Christ Church, increased dramatically throughout the 1950s and the area is now a densely populated Barrio.
