History:

St. Andrew's Church is the oldest Anglican church in existence in Barbados. It was built in 1665 and is located in the centre of the island in the parish of Saint Andrew. It is an important landmark, both historically and religiously, and a regular place of worship for the community of Barbadians, both locals and visitors. The church has undergone many changes throughout the centuries, with one of the most notable being its physical structure, which was totally redesigned in 1833. This new design featured a tower and spire, two entrances, and distinctive transepts. It also included a vaulted sanctuary and an aisles leading to the altar. Since then, several other modifications have been made to the building, including the addition of frescoes, stained glass windows, and a new organ. The church also features a very important historic plaque, which honors two leading citizens of the parish. This plaque was placed in 1874 and names James Haynes, who is believed to be one of Barbados' first Christian settlers, and Deborah Meredith, who maintained and read the Parish Register for over four decades.
