The Church started as early as 1886, when several former slaves and indentured servants from Africa and the British Isles began holding Sabbath services at a private home. By 1889 the small congregation had grown and a more permanent place of worship was needed. The new church was built in the era of the "Great Awakening" and was officially opened in 1890. the role of pastors has developed over the years. Of particular significance to the church’s growth was the leadership of Rev James King and Governor Bishop Field, who both served from the 1920s to 1960s.
