Brief History:
The Puthia Jame Mosque located in Rajshahi, Bangladesh was built in 1583 during the Afghan rule of Bengal and is still standing today. This mosque is an artistically shaped building as well as being historically significant. Designed in Achmada style, it is the Tamil classic approach which can also be found in southern India. It was built by the then local ruler known as the Hazrat Yakub Khan who ruled from 1566 to 1600. Not only is it an outstanding example of religious architecture from the sixteenth century, it is the oldest mosque from the Mughal period left in Bangladesh. The Puthia Jame Mosque in Rajshahi, Bangladesh is a significant archaeological monument that dates back to the 16th century. The mosque is a classic example of Bengal-Transitional architecture, combining Hindu and Muslim influences. The building is rectangular in shape, with a large single-domed main hall and two entrance archways. The walls of the mosque are adorned with intricate geometric patterns, and its interior consists of three mihrabs set into the qibla wall. The mihrab’s walls are boldly decorated with red and white stones and are surrounded by domed alcoves connected by a series of pointed arches. The mosque also includes four minarets with elegant cupolas nestled at the corner of the building. The roof is designed in a unique corbelled style, with sharp angles and multiple tiers. The roof is topped by a central onion-shaped dome, and high battlements stand on either side of the main entrance. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
