Architecture:
The Chitalmari Jame Mosque is a historic mosque located in Bagerhat, Bangladesh. It was built by a Sufi saint Pir Gazi Kashani in 1534 AD and is one of the most visited places in Bagerhat. The architecture is typical of many Mughal period mosques of the subcontinent. The mosque is built in a rectangular form, with an inner courtyard. The walls of the mosque are made of rough brick made from mud, but the upper parts are made of finely cut stones. The roof is topped with four small domes, each constructed from small red bricks and topped with a pointed cupola. The doorway is arched and flanked by two terracotta tiled entranceways. The interior of the mosque is divided into three chambers. The central chamber is the main prayer hall and contains the mihrab (altar) and minbar (pulpit). The other two chambers contain several windows and alcoves for storing Quranic copies. The walls of the chambers are decorated with ornate plasterwork, glazed tilework and painted wood panels. The interior courtyard is surrounded by a series of small arched galleries. The exterior of the mosque is marked by an octagonal platform above the main entrance. The single minaret in one corner is of the typical Mughal style, and has three octagonal storeys with a conical spire at the top.
