Oil well No. 1 in Manama, Bahrain is an oil well that was drilled in 1932, making it one of the first oil wells in the Middle East. The oil was first found during the exploration efforts of the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), a joint venture between Standard Oil Company (now called Chevron) and the Government of Bahrain. The first oil from the well was struck on May 31, 1932 at a depth of 288 feet (88.3 meters). This was followed by the drilling of a deeper well at 1,003 feet (306 meters) in 1934, and a third well in 1939 at a depth of 1,491 feet (454 meters). These three wells were the first in the Middle East capable of producing commercial quantities of oil. The Manama oil fields were important to the economic development and modernization of Bahrain, providing much needed revenue. Oil production peaked in the late 1940s, reaching its highest level in 1947 with 38,000 barrels per day. By the late 1960s, the wells were beginning to decline and production dropped to 6,000 barrels per day in 1971.
