History:

The Ganja Gate, also known as the Gate of Victory, is a large-scale memorial gates located in the city of Baku in Azerbaijan. It commemorates the victory of the Azerbaijani forces over the Ottoman forces during the Ganja rebellion of 1918. The gate marks the entry of the Azerbaijani forces into Ganja, the capital city of the Ganja Khanate, on the night of August 30, 1918. The gates were constructed in 1978, on the 60th anniversary of the event, after a design by Azerbaijani architect Yusif Shukurov. The structure consists of two large U-shaped minarets, 65 meters in height, and a grand arch made of marble, limestone, and red brick. On the arch is a golden inscription that reads, “Victory to the people of Azerbaijan”. The arch is a major landmark in Baku, often serving as a backdrop for national holidays and events. A six-lane highway passes through the arch, with a park in the middle. Every August 30th, the gate is lit and illuminated in celebration of the event.
