History:

Belvedere Palace is a historic landmark located in Vienna, Austria. It is a grand Baroque complex, consisting of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, and the surrounding gardens. The Upper Belvedere was originally built in 1714-1716 as a summer palace by Prince Eugene of Savoy and was designed by the Italian architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. Prince Eugene was badly wounded in combat twice and, after retiring from military service, decided to withdraw to Vienna to enjoy his wealth, which he had gained from war victories. The palace served as a symbol of his power and influence, and it took some 14 years to complete. The Lower Belvedere, or Orangery Palace, was completed in 1721, two years after Prince Eugene's death. It was created to house his wealth of artwork, including sculptures and paintings by the Renaissance masters. The Lower Belvedere is considered one of the most important examples of Baroque architecture in Vienna. In 1781, the palaces were taken over by Empress Maria Theresa, the mother of Emperor Francis I. She used the palaces to display her fine art collection and opened them to the public. The Belvedere Palace has continued to be used for its original purpose and is now home to the Belvedere Museum and the Austrian Gallery, both of which feature artwork from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. The palace complex and gardens are also popular tourist destinations. In 1998, the Belvedere Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
