Tatev Monastery is an Armenian monastery located on a large basalt plateau near the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southeastern Armenia. It was built in the 9th century and is one of the most iconic of Armenia’s many medieval monasteries. It has served as a religious, educational and cultural center throughout its life and still remains that way today. Tatev Monastery History In its 1000 year history, Tatev Monastery has gone through dramatic events and experienced tremendous growth. Built in the 9th century, it was destroyed by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century. It was repaired and enjoyed a period of growth in the 14th and 15th centuries under the guidance of the Zakarid Princes of Armenia. In 1588, by order of the Persian ruler, Shah Abbas, the monastery was plundered and destroyed, although mass reconstructions and renovations in 1630 gave the monastery its current look. Tatev Monastery Facts Tatev Monastery is situated atop a basalt plateau near the village of Tatev in southeastern Armenia. It is part of an intact monastic complex that consists of the main church of Sts. Peter and Paul (906–933), the church of St. Gregory (1295), the prayer hall of St. Mary (1467) and the refectory (1430–1441). The simple two-floor structure of the monastery is enhanced by two tall bell towers, which provided early warning of invading armies. Tatev Monastery Services Since its foundation, Tatev Monastery has served as a place of religious worship, education, and cultural preservation. It is the home of artisans who preserved the artistic traditions and created handmade merchandise. Today, it is a popular destination for religious pilgrims, tourists and art lovers.
