Khor Virap is an Armenian monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia, near the closed Turkish-Armenian border and the Turkish village of Akhurik. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites and the holiest place in Armenia. The monastery was founded in 642 AD by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, who converted King Tiridates III to Christianity and made Armenia the first officially Christian country in the world.
