Holy Mother of God Narthex In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
The Holy Mother of God Narthex in Armenia is a reputed shrine in the country, located at the ancient fortress of Tigranakert. It is believed to have been founded by the first Christian king of Armenia, St. Gregory the Illuminator. Built by him, the narthex has been blessed by the virgin Mary, hence its special place in Armenian history. It is a place of prayer and pilgrimage, where numerous worthy souls have come to offer their prayers. According to ancient traditions, it is believed that St. Gregory himself prayed at this site.
The main shrine of the Narthex is a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus in her arms. The statue is believed to be an exact replica of the original icon located at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in Vagharshapat. This replica was commissioned by King Tigran the Second in accordance with the wishes of his father. Other shrines and artifacts located at the narthex include 15th century frescoes, religious carvings and engravings, paintings, and votive crosses.
The narthex is known for the special services it offers. Every Sunday, there is a celebration of the Divine Liturgy, while those who visit on weekdays can take advantage of the unique services offered by the monks and clerics stationed at the Narthex. During the summer season, special activities are held in the courtyard, such as music concerts, theatrical performances, and other cultural events. Visitors don’t just come for the spiritual and cultural benefits of the services, but also to enjoy the stunning view of the city from the terrace.
