Srveghi Monastery In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services

Srveghi Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastery located in the Tavush Province of Armenia. It was founded in the 11th century by the grandson of the Catholicos of All Armenians, Gregory Srveggyatzi. The impressive fortress-monastery sits atop a barren hill overlooking the surrounding valleys. The monastery is now a popular pilgrimage site for Armenians who often make the journey from far away to visit the shrine of St. Mary and participate in religious activities. The complex contains three churches, a gavit and a belfry as well as several outbuildings and a cemetery. The most important building within the complex is the restored St.Mary church which contains centuries-old frescos and intricate stone carvings. The monastery has a long and distinguished history and was, at one point, home the Patriarch of All Armenians. Today, Srveghi Monastery continues to serve as a destination and spiritual sanctuary for the Armenian people.
