Saint Nshan Church In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services

Saint Nshan Church in Armenia is a late medieval Armenian church found in the village of Deshtaz, around 55 kilometers to the east of the capital city of Yerevan. The church is built upon the remains of an earlier church, believed to have been dating back to 821 AD, with renovation and construction having taken place in 1501-1502 AD. The Holy Archangels’ Church (Also called the Saint Nshan Church) is a two-storey structure with a belfry and bell tower at the southeast corner. The walls are decorated with ornate detailing; the well-preserved frescoes show saints from the Middle Ages. The church's interior is lined with frescoes, particularly in the lower and middle parts, in which saints and other figures are painted with ancient Armenian inscriptions. The church serves as an important pilgrimage site for Armenians, and on the Feast of the Assumption large celebrations are held including services, ceremonial processions and shamagirs (Armenian sacrificial offerings). The Church continues to offer regular services today, as well as occasional celebration services for special occasions. There is also an outdoor cemetery for funerals, which is still used today.
