Shoghakat Church In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
Shoghakat Church is a historical Armenian-Apostolic church located in the center of Yerevan, Armenia. It is among the oldest churches in Yerevan and was built in 1694 by a group of Armenia's that recently resettled in the area. It is an example of traditional Armenian architecture and it is believed to be the first Christian cathedral ever built in Yerevan.
The church was built from mud-bricks and lime and is sky-blue in color. It then had wooden doors and windows, which were removed after several fires and wars.
In the 19th century, Shoghakat Church was renovated with red brick and many features were added including a library and bell tower. In 1872, a belfry was added and two bells were installed.
The church also underwent renovation in 1997 and it has been listed as a national monument of Armenia since.
Shoghakat Church serves as an important symbol of the Armenian Apostolic Church and its history in Yerevan. Its services include giving sermons, baptism, weddings and funerals. The church also offers Sunday School classes, religious festivals and organizes lectures and workshops.
