The Plaza del Congreso is a public square located in the Palermo district in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Located at the intersection of Callao Avenue and Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, it was the site of the Argentine National Congress from 1854 to 1916. The site of the Plaza del Congreso was first used as the original Plaza de Mayo in 1812. The square was renamed Plaza del Congreso in 1854 when it became the home of the Argentine National Congress. This is where Agustín P. Justo declared his candidacy for President of Argentina in 1931. From 1916 until its completion in 1936, the building of the Congreso de la Nación was constructed, replacing the square with an avenue. In 1945, the Plaza del Congreso was declared a protected national monument and included in the National Register of Historic Sites. It is now one of Buenos Aires' most important public squares, hosting numerous political events and protests.
