The monument is a result of a grassroots campaign to honor the life of Martín Rodríguez, a gaucho commander who fought in the independence wars of Argentina at the beginning of the 19th century. Born in 1768 in Buenos Aires Province, Rodríguez, otherwise known as El Caballero de los Llanos, or the Knight of the Plains, was one of the earliest military heroes of the nation. Having fought in the early battles against the Spanish, Rodríguez eventually became a governor of Córdoba and a leader of the Argentine cavalry. The monument to Rodríguez is a bronze sculpture of the gaucho on horseback, its presence meant to honor the brave and independent spirit of the Argentine people. The statue was originally located at the central Plaza de Mayo, but, due to its prominence there, it was relocated to the Plaza San Martín, where it remains to this day.
