The cathedral was designated a Minor Basilica in 1962 and serves as the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Duluth. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary was founded in 1873 by Bishop Peter Baraga in Duluth, Minnesota. The original church, constructed of logs, served the needs of the area's growing Catholic population until it burned down in December 1908. In 1912, the cornerstone for the current cathedral was laid and it was completed in 1915. The building was renovated and enlarged in the late 1950s and it was re-dedicated in 1957. The cathedral was designated a Minor Basilica in 1962 and it serves as the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Duluth. The building is 156 feet long and 60 feet wide, and the interior features a wooden vaulted ceiling.
