Juan José Castelli was an Argentine lawyer, soldier and statesman, and a leader in the early wars of independence from colonial Spanish rule. After leading the successful defense of Buenos Aires from British forces during the 1806–07 British invasions of the Río de la Plata, Castelli was appointed as the Supreme Director of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (now known as Argentina). In this role, in 1810, he was instrumental in drafting the May Revolution and in the drafting of the 1813 Argentine Constitution, the first constitutional document of the country. Castelli was later killed in a battle against Spanish Royalist forces in 1812. It is believed the placement of the monument in the city was to mark Juan José Castelli's importance to the development of Argentine independence.
