History:

The Monumento a la Madre (also known as Monumento a la Madre de la Patria) was erected in Buenos Aires in 1987 to commemorate the canonization of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. In recognition of this event, the monument was built on what is called the Avenida de la Virgen de Luján. The monument was designed by Mexican sculptor Rafael Cauduro. The ten-meter tall bronze monument is structured in the form of a tear drop shaped altar, divided into eleven sections,recalling the eleven cities venerated by the Virgin of Luján. The monument underwent a project of renovation in 2006, with the addition of a rose garden and a grove of 38 small pines. Today, the Monumento a la Madre is one of the most iconic public monuments in the city of Buenos Aires. It is a popular location for pilgrimages and festivities, celebrated on 8 December to mark the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and on 11 October to celebrate the anniversary of the Virgin's canonization.
