History:
The Monumento a Leonardo Da Vinci is a monument located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was erected in commemoration of the life and works of Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The monument is located in Plaza Leonardo da Vinci same name, next to the corner of Avenida 9 de Julio and Corrientes Avenue. The matter began in 1923 when, at the request of the Italian community in the country, the City of Buenos Aires demanded a “monument dedicated to the great genius of Leonardo da Vinci in the new square that was about to be inaugurated” that same year. The projected budget was 30,000 pesos. For its construction, a jury was created with some notables as its members, including the mayor of the capital, Luis Giorgi, and the president of the Italian-Argentine Chamber of Commerce whose competence were directed to choose among the different designs submitted, a work that had to express "the admiration and respect of the Argentine nation for a genius who represents the culture of the entire world”. In April 1926, the city of Milan donated to Buenos Aires a statue sculpted by the Italian sculptor Galileo Chini and placed in one of the squares of that city, the same one that represents Da Vinci holding a model of an ornithopter. The sculpture was shipped to the capital of Argentina in June of that same year and in December it was inaugurated in the newly named Plaza Leonardo da Vinci. On the occasion, the sculptor himself, the mayor and other personalities attended. The monument is located on a high pedestal; in front of the da Vinci statue, the sides are decorated with four plaques. The first was placed as a tribute to the City of Milan by the residents of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The other three have excerpts from Da Vinci’s works. The environment of the square is filled with green vegetation in the form of trees, plants, and bushes, which make it a pleasant place to take a stroll while contemplating the sculpture of the genius.
