History:

Monumento al Pensador, or Monument to the Thinker, is a public kinetic sculpture located in the Parque 3 de Febrero in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was created by Argentinian sculptor Eduardo Barnes in 1965. The structure consists of two parts, one of a standing man (the Thinker) and a hand with its arm outstretched as if in gesture of contemplation. Both the man and hand are made of galvanized steel, and when the wind blows they move together to create a mesmerizing show of action and motion. The idea for the monument was inspired by French poet and artist Auguste Rodin’s famous sculpture The Thinker. Rodin’s sculpture was created in 1880 and became a symbol of contemplation, creativity, and intellectual reflection. Barnes’s creation was initially meant to be a permanent structure for the National University of Buenos Aires, however it met with considerable public resistance and was eventually determined to have been made with unauthorised material and consequently rejected by the university. In 1965, it was relocated to the Parque 3 de Febrero, where it has since become one of the most iconic public sculptures in the city. It has been the site of numerous protests, rallies, and civic gatherings, and is a popular tourist destination. The Monumento al Pensador is now considered an emblematic public symbol of Buenos Aires and a celebration of thoughtfulness and creativity.
