His most significant battle was the 1817 Battle of Ituzaingó, during which he was wounded and achieved victory along with the troops of General José de San Martín. After the battle, Francisco Villaflor joined San Martín's Army of the North and fought in many more battles until his death in 1820. To commemorate his service and memory within the Argentine War of Independence, the Monumento a Francisco Villaflor was erected in central Buenos Aires in 1887. The monument features a 10-meter tall bronze sculpture of Francisco Villaflor astride a steed with a flag in one arm. The sculpture sits atop a marble podium at the center of a grand plaza.
