Justo José de Urquiza was an Argentine soldier and statesman who served as the President of Argentina from 1854 to 1860. He is remembered as a great leader who laid the foundations for the country's modern constitutional system. The monument to Urquiza was the product of a commission led by the national painter Domingo Antonio Ucelay, rose to the design of the architect Pedro Benoit. It is a monument built in cast iron, with a height of 21.41 meters and a width of 3.14 meters, and is located in front of the entrance of Correo Central, on the intersection of avenues Leandro N. Alem and Rivadavia. The monument consists of two vertical bodies; the first, of 7.75 meters, is composed of a circular base, in the center of which is a bust of the General and President. The second body is the pedestal of 13.66 meters, which is born from the Caudillo's pedestal and is composed of a base in the shape of a hemisphere, on which are placed the shields of the provinces that joined the Argentine Confederation. At the top of the monument is an allegorical statue of Victoria, (the Goddess of Victory). Initially, the iron statue had a length of 3.14 meters and was carried by two eagles, but in 1956 it was replaced with a copper one, 4 meters high and sculpted in bronze by José Fioravanti.
